In the middle of a huge wooded area there is a hearty landscape with high, wooded moors, glacial lakes and special rock formations. The high moors near Kaltenbronn are something special every visitor senses this. Yet few people know that the native plants and animals react sensitively to the slightest changes. Damage to this unique ecosystem cannot be reversed. In 1928 the Wildsee Moor was already considered a special area. In 1939 and 1940 the nature sanctuaries of Wildsee Moor and Hohlohsee were created.
Rising numbers of visitors over the years represent an increasing threat for the moors. At the beginning of the 1990s, an attractive circuit of trails was developed in order to protect the moors. In 2000 a large portion of the Kaltenbronn area was declared the Nature and Forest Sanctuary Kaltenbronn. The region is also part of the European sanctuary system "Natura 2000".
Nature conservancy and forest management therefore follow a common goal of maintaining and protecting this unique moor and forest landscape with its plants and animals.
